The rules
5 steps.
- You are dealt seven cards and one is turned face up.
- On your turn play a card matching the face-up suit or its number.
- An eight can be played on anything — then you name the suit.
- Nothing to play? Draw a card, then pass if it still does not fit.
- Say "last card" when you are down to one, or somebody can catch you.
What the phone does
The phone deals, shuffles the pile back in when it runs out, and refuses an illegal card. It does not tell anyone what you are holding.
It is a dealer and a scorekeeper, never a judge. It cannot hear the room and it does not decide who was right.
