The bit everyone gets wrong
With only two players a jack acts as a skip, not a reverse — otherwise the turn would come straight back.

The rules
5 steps.
- You are dealt seven cards and one is turned face up.
- Play a card matching the suit or the number.
- A two makes the next player take two, and can be answered with another two.
- An eight skips them. A jack reverses the direction. An ace changes the suit.
- Say "last card" on one, and go out to win the round.
What the phone does
The phone tracks the direction and the pick-up pile, and refuses a card that does not fit.
It is a dealer and a scorekeeper, never a judge. It cannot hear the room and it does not decide who was right.
